David Sinclair studied drawing and painting at the Glasgow School of Art under William Armour and Mary Armour and David Donaldson. ​ He was awarded a Post Diploma and the major travelling scholarship and studied in Holland, Paris and London. ​ In 1995 he won the Murray Thompson Award at the Royal Scottish Academy and in 1997 the Morrison Portrait Award at the Royal Scottish Academy. In 2001 he was elected to the Royal Scottish Watercolor Society (RSW) and was a member of the Council from 2002-2005. In 2004 he won the Winsor and Newton Award at the annual RSW Exhibition. ​ His work is included in public and private collections and is regularly shown at the Royal Scottish Academy, and the R.S.W., and frequently at the Glasgow Institute, and the Society of Scottish Artists. ​
