He was born as Jan Marian Kościałkowski. Upon graduation he went to Paris, where he studied for a year at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts. Having completed his military service, from 1936 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw under Tadeusz Pruszkowski and Mieczysław Kotarbiński . After the outbreak of World War II he served in the propaganda unit of the 5th Kresowa Infantry Division, reaching Italy in 1944, where he participated in the battles for Monte Casino. While in Rome, he attended classes at the art academy under the tutelage of the great cubist Gino Severini. At this time he encountered the work of Piero della Francesca, which made a great impression on him. In 1947 he was evacuated to Great Britain, where he obtained a scholarship to the Sir John Cass School of Art, Architecture and Design in London. He met Tadeusz Piotr Potworowski, who helped him to exhibit his works at the Gimpel Fils Gallery, where in 1948 he was rewarded his first individual exhibition of which this is one fine example. In the 1950s, he made several artistic trips around the Iberian Peninsula, and in 1958 he received British citizenship. In 1958 and 1959, small exhibitions of Marian Kościałkowski's drawings took place at CBWA in Poznań and Szczecin. In 1965, the artist's first serious health crisis occurred. Three years later, he and his wife bought a house in Carrara, where he carved marble. He died after a long illness in 1977.
